FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything you'd like to know before your first class.

Who is the training for?

Beginners with no experience as well as advanced students. Women are explicitly welcome and make up around 20 to 30 percent of the group. Because we train realistically, please discuss physical limitations (such as a shoulder injury) with the instructor beforehand.

What is the minimum age?

Classes are for adults. You can join from 17, possibly from 16 if you fit the group or a parent trains with you.

What will I learn?

Realistic self-defence standing, on the ground and in situations like trams, trains or stations, including defence against stick and knife attacks. Each month has a focus, such as ground defence, knife defence or basic programmes 1 to 3.

What does a class look like?

Intense warm-up and striking, realistic partner drills, scenario training and drills under pressure. From day one you defend against a partner's attacks, playfully and with little force at first.

How intense is it?

Intense and dynamic, with lots of action, reaction and partner changes. Safety comes first: newcomers are built up step by step, not thrown in at the deep end.

What is the goal?

First you learn strikes and kicks that stop an attacker. At its core, it is about staying mentally strong under pressure and doing what is necessary to escape a dangerous situation as safely as possible.

How are beginners integrated?

The group is capped at 20 participants. Experienced and new students train together with regular partner changes. Instructors give everyone feedback so that all make progress.

What should I bring to a trial session?

Comfortable training trousers, a T-shirt and a drink. We train barefoot or in socks, never in shoes. Dark colours preferred.

Do I need protective gear?

Men need a groin guard. A mouthguard is optional; for knife training we recommend a fencing mask. You can buy gear yourself (for example at Budo.ch) or through us.

How many trial sessions can I do?

Your first two trial sessions are free, so you can see whether the school suits you.

What does it cost?

Membership is CHF 80 per month. There is currently one class per week; a second on another weekday is planned.

How long is the contract?

The minimum term is 9 months. After that you can cancel at any time with 90 days' notice by email.

When and where are classes held?

Mondays from 7.00 to 8.15 pm at Schöntalstrasse 21, 8004 Zurich, on the top floor of a karate school, accessed through the back courtyard. There is street parking nearby, but none directly in front of the building.

How important is respect?

Very. We train relaxed and respectfully. Instructors step in immediately if that is not respected, and anyone who doesn't comply leaves the class.

Who is not welcome?

Anyone who wants to train to use violence or show off is in the wrong place, as is anyone with a conviction for a violent crime.

Is it a problem if I'm a complete beginner?

No. You join in everything from the start, playfully and with little force at first. Experienced students and partner changes help you settle in quickly.
