What is Krav Maga? Krav Maga Zurich explained

Krav Maga is Hebrew for “contact combat”. Learn where the system comes from, what it is based on and how you train Krav Maga in Zurich at 2Fight.

Krav Maga is a modern self-defence system. It is purpose-driven, easy to learn and built entirely around real threats. At Krav Maga Zurich you learn exactly that: to protect yourself effectively in a short time.

Where does Krav Maga come from?

Krav Maga was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld. In the 1930s he defended himself and his neighbours in Bratislava against violent gangs and realised that sporting fighting techniques are not enough on the street. He later developed the system further in Israel. Since then, Krav Maga has been trained worldwide by authorities, security forces and private individuals.

Few techniques, natural reflexes

Krav Maga is based on simple principles and intuitive movements you can still use under heavy stress. We deliberately keep the number of techniques small: in an emergency you should not have to think about which one fits. Because the movements build on natural reflexes, you master them after just a few sessions.

No rules, no competitions

On the street there are no weight classes and no referee to decide when a fight is over. That is why Krav Maga has no tournaments, points, traditions or rituals. There is only one rule: don't get hurt.

The 2Fight principles

  • Never try to match the attacker's strength
  • Speed is everything
  • Always attack vulnerable targets
  • Be offensive instead of purely defensive

How you train Krav Maga in Zurich

At Krav Maga Zurich we train every Monday from 7.00 to 8.15 pm at Schöntalstrasse 21 in Zurich-Wiedikon, a few minutes' walk from Wiedikon and Selnau stations. Each class starts with an intense warm-up and striking. Then come realistic partner drills, scenarios and drills under pressure. The physical effort is intended: it simulates the stress of a real attack.

You learn strikes, kicks and releases as well as defence against sticks, knives, guns and multiple attackers, standing and on the ground. Each month has a focus, such as ground defence or knife defence.

Who is Krav Maga Zurich for?

For adults from 17, with no prior experience needed. Around a quarter of participants are women. Because we work in small groups with experienced instructors, beginners keep up quickly. To read how women benefit from Krav Maga, see the article self-defence for women in Zurich.
